Burl raised his spear, and plunged down on the back of the moving thing, thrusting his spear with all the force he could command. He had fallen upon the shining back of one of the huge, meat-eating beetles, and his spear had slid across the horny armor and then stuck fast, having pierced only the leathery tissue between the insect's head and thorax.

Murray Leinster's novella The Mad Planet, (originally published in 1920) is not much remembered today, but it was an important milestone in magazine science fiction, introducing loads of tropes that became staples of SF for decades. (Check out my review of that e-book.) This novelette, published a year later, picks up the story where "The Mad Planet" left off, but it is short on new ideas, and is instead a sequence of man-vs.-giant-insect battles. It's not a bad read, but you should definitely start with the earlier tale.Product details

The Red Dust Murray Leinster 9781482058727 Books Reviews
Although this work claimed to be a sequel it was a bad oh so bad re-write of the very, very good original. why do people feel compelled to do this? Like a vandal putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa...for goodness sake this should be better labeled as not the work of the great master...
Good
The science of the day is a bit off by modern standards, but not a bad story. A variation of a post apocalypse story, with the Apocalypse being natural.
