He discovers solace in a summer Micmac camp, and with the aid of Chief Gray Owl and the beautiful Tia, Shane's heart begins to heal. On his journey he is introduced to a world of fire breathers, belly dancers, and crystal balls. In book three a powerful evil presence descends upon the unsuspecting Micmac camp, Shane joins forces with the spirit world to confront this threat and defend all he has come to know and love. Is Shane strong enough to face such a merciless entity, or is he destined to a life alone, riding in the wind?
Iron Horse Rider One Iron Horse Rider Trilogy Book 1 eBook Adelle Laudan
The opening scene of Iron Horse Rider is a terrible accident/crash in which Shane's wife dies. What follows is a lengthy flashback detailing how he met his wife and fell in love, and briefly covering how she started riding motorcycle. Flashbacks are very hard to do (well) even when they are short. I felt this flashback was too long and took the focus off the main story; I would have preferred the key backstory elements `worked in' to the main storyline. The setting that Shane finds himself in after running (er, riding) away from home is somewhat exotic in that most readers will never have heard of the Micmac tribe - and that they spend summers as their ancestors did. There are some mystical qualities to the storyline, which some readers may not care for, as well as healing elements (which I especially liked).
As far as characters go: Shane was an authentic and real biker with an interesting and believable past and personal issues. The heroine (Tia) was less interesting to me; it seemed she didn't have any bad qualities. The antagonist could have been quite interesting (what made him so angry and mean?) but the author did not take the time to flesh him out. The minor characters - biker friends - were well done (like people I'd meet in my own motorcycle club, not gang members). I especially liked that the focus was on Shane's personal transformation (a male point of view), as I tend to write that way myself.
I found the plot and conflict compelling, except for one thing: I couldn't quite seem to get past the fact that Tia was a potential new romance for Shane so soon after losing the love of his life (and hers, although not as recent). To the author's credit, this is a delicate balance and she does not take this idea too far; the characters are friends but with attraction! In that sense, this is not your typical romance novel - but I like that.
I had to keep reading to see how the `competition' between Shane and the antagonist turned out. There is an excellent `karma' twist as well. All in all, I enjoyed this biker novel more than others I've read and would like to read more of Ms. Laudan's biker fiction. My rating: 3.5 stars

Iron Horse Rider One Iron Horse Rider Trilogy Book 1 eBook Adelle Laudan Reviews
Well written piece of work, i wondered where it was based and then the author told me...again I was left waiting for more
Shane has to deal with his wife dying on her motorcycle while he escapes on his. What follows weaves an interesting and unpredictable story of his grief and how he overcomes it in an unusual way that included learning something about his mother and father. Another good biker story by Adelle!
After his wife Kelly is involved in a fatal motorcycle accident, Shane is devastated. Running away from the life he lived with Kelly, Shane befriends an Indian chief and, despite resisting, finds himself falling in love again.
It seems to me that the romance genre has more conventions than most. Since there isn't an official organization approving and codifying these, not every romance reader will agree on what they are. Some, like the happily-ever-after ending, is one which most would agree is required. "Iron Horse Rider" has the required ending. Author Adelle Laudan describes "Iron Horse Rider" as romance and I agree. However, the male lead or hero, to use the label typical among romance readers, is the focus of the story rather than the heroine. I don't know if this violates an unwritten genre convention. I do know it makes for an unconventional romance novel.
"Iron Horse Rider" has some other elements that are, if not unique, at least uncommon in the typical romance novel plot. One of these is that Shane is a motorcyclist, the iron horse in the title. This is a big influence on Shane's life and lifestyle. It also figures prominently throughout the story. A large portion of the story takes place at an Indian camp. (Substitute your preferred term - Native American or, since the story takes place in Canada, First Nation, the term you'll sometimes find used there for the native population.) Indian culture is a significant part of the story with some of their beliefs helping Shane eventually come to terms with Kelly's death.
Romance fans should find "Iron Horse Rider" a different kind of read while still fitting what many would want in a story. For romance readers who love cruising on their Harley it should be an easy decision.
