einte años hace, poco más o menos, que al declinar una tarde del mes de junio un joven de hermosa presencia atravesaba a caballo los campos pintorescos que riega el Tínima, y dirigía a paso corto su brioso alazán por la senda conocida en el país con el nombre de camino de Cubitas, por conducir a las aldeas de este nombre, llamadas también tierras rojas. Hallábase el joven de quien hablamos a distancia de cuatro leguas de Cubitas, de donde al parecer venía, y a tres de la ciudad de Puerto Príncipe, capital de la provincia central de la isla de Cuba en aquella época, como al presente, pero que hacía entonces muy pocos años había dejado su humilde dictado de villa.
Fuese efecto de poco conocimiento del camino que seguía, fuese por complacencia de contemplar detenidamente los paisajes que se ofrecían a su vista, el viajero acortaba cada vez más el paso de su caballo y le paraba a trechos como para examinar los sitios por donde pasaba. A la verdad, era harto probable que sus repetidas detenciones sólo tuvieran por objeto admirar más a su sabor los campos fertilísimos de aquel país privilegiado, y que debían tener mayor atractivo para él si como lo indicaban su tez blanca y sonrosada, sus ojos azules, y su cabello de oro había venido al mundo en una región del Norte.
El sol terrible de la zona tórrida se acercaba a su ocaso entre ondeantes nubes de púrpura y de plata, y sus últimos rayos, ya tibios y pálidos, vestían de un colorido melancólico los campos vírgenes de aquella joven naturaleza, cuya vigorosa y lozana vegetación parecía acoger con regocijo la brisa apacible de la tarde, que comenzaba a agitar las copas frondosas de los árboles agostados por el calor del día. Bandadas de golondrinas se cruzaban en todas direcciones buscando su albergue nocturno, y el verde papagayo con sus franjas de oro y de grana, el cao de un negro nítido y brillante, el carpintero real de férrea lengua y matizado plumaje, la alegre guacamalla, el ligero tomeguín, la tornasolada mariposa y otra infinidad de aves indígenas, posaban en las ramas del tamarindo y del mango aromático, rizando sus variadas plumas como para recoger en ellas el soplo consolador del aura.

This book needs to be taken in the context of its time. It is beautifully written with long passages about love and the Cuban landscape so the plot moves slowly. I guess this is typical of 19th century Spanish Romanticism (see the reviews for the free version - reviews worth reading though the free version is no good - missing lots of text). The book is notable in that it has anti-slavery and pro-woman themes. It isn't abolitionist like Uncle Tom's Cabin 50 or so years later but it emphasizes the humanity of Sab the slave. There is one brief passage where the author describes the hard life of slaves working in the sugar plantations but that is almost an aside. The anti-slavery theme is more about Sab being a man who feels love like any man but who cannot act on it because of his race and position. The women are also caught by their position in colonial Cuba, but are presented more positively than the men other than Sab.Product details

It was a terribly written story and the app doesn't have page numbers.
Very dramatic style of writing that is more Lope de Vegarish than cuban. Interesting story a la Corin Tellado. Would make a great novela.
El libro no lo he leído aún, porque tiene tantos rayones y escritos al borde con marcadores de colores que da hasta náuseas el pensar en leerlo. Compraré una edición nueva sin tantos garabatos.
